Never alone

Never Alone tells about the eve of the Second World War, when Europe is living in a dark time and Finland accepts refugees from Germany and Austria. At the center of helping refugees is the Finnish businessman and philanthropist Abraham Stiller. He does everything he can to help the Jewish refugees who came to Finland and are handed over from Finland to the Auschwitz concentration camp. The film tells their story.

A poor nature writer named Hamster, who is fascinated by natural disasters, lives in his wooden villa in the countryside together with his only friend, a pet mouse. In the village, he is considered a little strange – and he is indeed of a special quality. When a family that won the lottery moves next door, Hamster gets the chance of his dreams to start hoarding and, at the same time, to change the life of Rurik, an accountant who has lost his will to live, and also the lives of his wife Tellu and their children. Mad hoarding begins as they get ready for the imagined “cruellest winter of all time”. All this gives the neighbour’s life a new direction, and Hamster’s dreams seem to be realised as the neighbour’s stock swells to unbridled proportions.

All The sins season 3

In the final season of the acclaimed crime drama All the Sins, the murderer calls the detectives back to Varjakka, which is haunted by old frauds.

As usual, Maria Sid and Johannes Holopainen star in the last season of the series. The events of the season take place five years ahead of where the first season began.

In the third season, all the stories of the series are tied together and the three-season series trilogy comes to an end.

The series is written by Mika Ronkainen and Venla Aakko.

En del av mitt hjärta – You’re Always in My Heart

The musical film is based on the songs of the popular Swedish musician Tomas Ledin, of which the most familiar to Finnish audiences are “Sommaren är kort” and “Sensuella Isabella.”

Isabella is a 35-year-old ambitious businesswoman in Stockholm’s financial world. She returns to her childhood hometown to celebrate her father’s 60th birthday and feels like a winner, the only success story among her school friends. Isabella’s self-confidence starts to crumble when she learns that her teenage love, Simon, is getting married to Molly, a childhood friend of Isabella’s. Isabella hasn’t even been invited to the wedding. Accustomed to getting what she wants, Isabella is disturbed to see Simon happy with someone else. A part of Isabella’s heart will always belong to Simon.

The year is 1999. Jussi Ritola, the local policeman in Varjaka, begins to investigate the death of his wife’s colleagues. The victims have developed a revolutionary touch screen in the company of a devout entrepreneur, and all of Varjakka has been able to participate in the international technology boom. When Ritola investigates the couple’s murder, the believers begin to protect their own. The Lestadio community is also being shaken by a women-led movement that has arrived in the community, which heralds the beginning of a new era. The millennium is coming to an end and a vague expectation of the end of the world hangs over everything, when Ritola’s murder investigation leads to a crisis in both her own life and the community.

The Paradise

The crime drama The Paradise is an 8-episode series about a crime investigator Hilkka Mäntymäki (Riitta Havukainen), who works in Oulu, Finland, and who travels to Fuengirola, Spain, to investigate the case of a missing Finnish family. Her husband Aarne (Risto Tuorila), who suffers from a memory disorder, and her grown-up daughter Anni (Armi Toivanen) and her family stay in Finland. On the Costa del Sol in Spain, Hilkka gets to know the local Finnish community, and little by little, she unravels a skilfully executed series of homicides that targets Finnish people. As the story goes on, the traces lead from the south back to the north, to the personal history of the victims and to the glory days of their home towns. In order to solve the murders, Hilkka must bring to life some ghosts from the past that no one would like to face anymore. Under the Spanish sun, the 60-year-old Hilkka’s personal life gets rejuvenated after a long period of hibernation. Working with her Spanish colleagues who are a part of the crime investigation, Andrés Villanueva (Fran Perea) and Luisa Salinas (María Romero), makes her remember why she joined the police force in the first place. However, she feels an increasing pressure from back home as Aarne’s illness is proceeding, and finally Hilkka is forced to make some painful decisions regarding her personal life as well. The over 40-year-old Andrés Villanueva is an experienced detective who has gone through a lot. His dreams about having a family and a new, tranquil life as a law enforcement officer in a small town crumbled as his Finnish fiancée (Elina Ylisuvanto) died tragically. As the investigation advances, Hilkka finds common ground with Andrés, who has been in the doldrums, and their surprising friendships leads them closer and closer to each other during their shared journey. The TV series The Paradise is located on the Costa del Sol in Spain and in Oulu, Finland. It is built around strong contrasts – south/north, light/shadow – which can be seen in both the storyline and the visual look of the series. Paradise’s themes include memories, dreams, and the fundamental human desire to strive towards a better life, and the biggest of them all: love. This character-driven drama is carried forward by the complex crime plot that ticks like a thriller, and as the series goes on, it irreversibly changes the lives of everyone who is involved. Finally it becomes painfully obvious that in Paradise, nothing is black and white.

Peacemaker

Peacemaker is a thrilling political drama series about the world of peacemaking, international arms trade and the deep-layered relationships of people in power. The story takes place in Turkey, Syria and Spain, and thus, the series is mainly shot in the Canary Islands and Spain. Peacemaker is based on the original story created by producer Johanna Enäsuo and scriptwriter Eriikka Etholen and the series is directed by the internationally awarded Finnish director AJ Annila (The Eternal Road, Sauna), who is best known for his visual style and unconventional subject choices. The cast of the series is multinational. The four main roles are played by the well-known Nordic actors Irina Björklund, Mikko Nousiainen, Louise Peterhoff and Kardo Razzazi as well as the German actor with a long international career, Richard Sammel, who is known for example from his role in Quentin Tarantino’s film Inglourious Basterds, 3 Days to Kill and Casino Royale. Peacemaker is collaboration between Nordic public broadcasters (YLE, SVT, NRK, DR, RUV), and it is an original series by Yle. Peacemaker’s international sales are handled through the Copenhagen based Sales Agent REinvent Studios International Sales.

The Dissidents

The fast-paced comedy “Sangarid” takes its audience back to the 1980s, where three Estonian friends flee from the Soviet Union to Finland in hopes of a Western lifestyle. Despite lacking personal experience with the West, the boys have been enticed by popular TV shows like Miami Vice, Knight Rider, and Santa Barbara. Their journey to Finland is successful after a few twists and turns, but because Finland at that time repatriated refugees back to the Soviet Union, the friends had to continue their journey to Sweden. Initially, our Western neighbor welcomed the trio who escaped the Iron Curtain as heroes, but after the initial excitement, the reception and life’s realities turned considerably bleaker. Despite the challenges, the friends show creativity, and through a series of mishaps, they eventually respond to their situation by turning to crime in Finland. In addition to its comedic elements, the film offers a fantastic glimpse into the 1980s culture in Finland, Estonia, and Sweden. The lively adventure comedy was written by Martin Algus, who drew inspiration from well-known Finnish events from the mid-1980s. However, the events in the movie are fictional.

All the Sins

A series of murders shocks a religious community in Northern Ostrobotnia. Criminal investigators of the National Bureau of Investigation Sanna Tervo and Lauri Räihä arrive to investigate the case. For Sanna this is just a case among others whereas Lauri has to face the community of his past. The return to the village of his childhood years takes Lauri on a truth-seeking journey of the murders, himself and the question whether all sins can be forgiven.

The crime series which is located in Northern Finland was created and written by Merja Aakko and Mika Ronkainen. Aakko has a long history in journalism and Ronkainen who is known for his award-winning documentaries has also directed the series.

When asked about The Nordisk Film & TV Fond Prize for outstanding writing Aakko and Ronkainen comment: All the Sins is a story of a small village in Northern Finland. We grew up in a place like that and one could say that we started picking up material for it right after when we were born. Receiving the prize strengthened our faith that there is an interest for well-told local stories everywhere.
